Creating an External List

Once a Bdc Model has been created, an external list can be created against it and used in SharePoint pages.

1. Open the SharePoint site where the External List is required.

2. Select: Site Actions -> More Options:

3. Select ‘External List’ from the options and click ‘Create’.

4. Fill in the ‘Name’ field, un-check the Quick Launch option and select the correct ‘External Content Type’:

5. Click ‘Create’; The List will be created and appear in the UI:

6. To modify the view and select the required columns or change the column order, click ‘Modify View’ on the ‘List’ menu.

7. The list can be used on it’s own, but it works best when inserted into a page.

8. Create a new page.

9. Add the new list from the ‘Existing List’ menu.

10. Select ‘Edit Web Part’ from the List’s web part menu and select the named view.

11. The web part should refresh displaying the External list with any modifications made to the view.

12. To view an item’s details, either click on the item hyperlink in the first column, or select ‘View Item’ from the item menu:

13. The ‘View Item’ form should appear, displaying all the fields defined in the model:

14. To edit an item (If an Update method has been defined in the model) either click the ‘Edit Item’ menu in the ‘View Item’ form, or select ‘Edit Item’ from the item menu:

15. The ‘Edit Item’ form should appear, displaying all the read/write fields defined in the model:

16. Fields can be edited and clicking ‘Save’ will submit the changes through the web service defined by the model.

17. To delete an item (If an Delete method has been defined in the model) select ‘Delete Item’ from the item menu:

18. The selected item will be deleted by the web service defined in the model and the list should refresh.

19. To create an item (If a Create method has been defined in the model) click the ‘Add new item’ button at the bottom of the list, the ‘New Item’ form should appear displaying all the read/write fields defined in the model:

20. Fields can be populated and clicking ‘Save’ will submit the changes through the web service defined by the model.
